"Man is a strange being, he always has a feeling somewhere that in his heart that things will always go well. It is like when on a rainy day you imagine the faint rays of the sun shine upon that rainy hill"

blogs are kinda embarressing, however, i think its a nice way to sort of publically journal. as much as i like privacy (a lot), i think that stories, tips, and opinions are better shared than bottled, plus it promotes discussion. enjoy

3650 days

Have ya ever thought to your self "what the hell am i doing"? There is a concept known to the greeks as "ἀμαρτια" which means, roughly, to "miss the mark". The wording is strange since it talks about missing something. What're ya missing? The mark. Humans have always tried to live by rules following certain paths. When we mess up, we're not just failing to do something, we fail to live up to that path, that mark.

What brings me to this point is the imagination of what the next ten years could look like, apropos to the percieved fall from that path. Ten years is an insanely short amount of time. 520 weeks. 3650 days. This shortness doesn't even need to be viewed in the grand scheme of things. A ten year old is objectively young. While small things may occur in those ten, their effects are wildly unproportional. The combat seen in both world wars combined is just over ten years long. The confederacy lasted less than five years. These short events shaped decades. The Reconstruction Era, both in Europe after the world wars and in America after their civil war, lead to what we define modern day European and American culture.

Now instead of imagining the rise of empires, think of those ten years on a human scale. If the American Civil War lasted four years and influenced American Culture for the next 70 years, imagine how much more something lasting that long could effect a single person who will only ever live for 70 years. Im not saying to enlist, but what I am saying is that at any given point, you are actively working towards what your next 10 years are going to look like. Maybe it is time to live our lives and create memories that will forever accompany us, or haunt us. Moreso, its a call to never faulter, to keep alert, to actively create, rather than destroy. Combined with a momento mori, you should be nice on your way.

So what we've all been doing is trying to not miss the mark. That sure is terrifiying. People around me, myself included, think that school counsellors shouldn't be forcing our careers down our throats, but they sure are right. Ten years ago I was day dreaming in a mcdonald's parking lot thinking about what toy i would get in my happy meal. In ten years i could be working a 9-5 with a beautiful family or i could be dealt the wrong cards, if you get what im riffing. Life is fragile. We should try a little harder on the mundane, it could be the last time we do such a thing. We should start producing rather than consuming. We should start living life in the present, and ironically, the first step is to start reflecting on what doesnt even exist.

Maybe day dreaming ain't so bad
